Tsakane man gets for life for raping, infecting 13-year-old with HIV

A 47-year-old man from Tsakane, in Ekurhuleni, has been sentenced to four life terms for repeatedly raping and impregnating a 13-year-old girl who was battling cancer.

The National Prosecuting Authority says the man also infected the child with HIV.

The court ordered that his name be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders and has also been declared unfit to work with children.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, says, “In court, the state successfully argued for life imprisonment for all counts of rape. The NPA welcomes the sentence and hopes that the sentence will serve as a deterrent to all wannabe offenders. This sentence demonstrates the NPA’s commitment to prosecuting cases of gender-based violence.”

Meanwhile, the Mothibistad Magistrates’ Court in the Northern Cape has ordered that a man accused of killing a woman and her son in an attempted rape case be sent for mental observation on Friday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Keobakile Matshidiso was arrested last week after he allegedly stabbed and hacked to death Sylvia and Phillip Pule. Nine-year-old Phillip Pule was caught in the firing line when he reportedly tried to protect his mother from the would be rapist.

Provincial NPA Spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, says they are opposing bail.
