ANC NGC under way at Birchwood Hotel
The volatile relationship between South Africa and the United States, which has seen US President Donald Trump take a stern stance against the recent G20 hosts, will be among the issues on the agenda of the ANC’s four-day NGC meeting.
But the fragile relations between the party and the SACP, the previous general election results, which forced the party into the government of national unity, as well as the upcoming local government elections, will also not be left out of the agenda.
The ANC has officially kicked off with its very important gathering this afternoon, with the party’s President Cyril Ramaphosa delivering the opening address at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
Ahead of the very important deliberations that will follow under the theme: “The Year of Renewal: Making the ANC a More Effective Instrument of the People to Achieve the Vision of the Freedom Charter”, ANC NEC member and former North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has highlighted some of the issues he says will be on the agenda.
“We will also be discussing this trumpeting trumpets. We are from the G20 now. It was very, very successful. For the first time in Africa, South Africa held a very successful G20. There are issues about the conduct of the US in as far as us continuing to be part of the G20 as one of the founders of the G20. So, those are some of the things we are going to discuss. The economy, the international relations, the building of the organisation, the relationship with the SACP now that it is going to stand on its own in the local government elections,” says Mahumapelo.

Last week, Trump said South Africa would not be invited to next year’s G20 Summit which will be held in the US.
In a post on Truth Social, he said the United States did not attend this year’s summit in Johannesburg because the South African government had refused to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Rights abuses endured by Afrikaners.
South Africa has constantly denied the unsubstantiated claims by the US, but Trump and his administration have refused to rethink their position on the issue.
Mahumapelo says the US must not dictate South Africa’s geo-political perspectives.
“We are sovereign state. We determine our own perspective and where we stand on political issues. We don’t determine for the United States of America (as to) what should be their posture on any matter. We don’t think any other country including the US must determine for any other country what should happen in geopolitics,” he adds.
Locally, the party’s performance at the previous elections – where it amassed less than 50% of the vote share, forcing the party into a government of national unity – will also be discussed.
“We have to come with ways, practically, to say how we go back to being an over 50%-organisation in the country in the context of renewal,” says Mahumapelo.
The meeting is officially under way.
