Umzimkhulu Bridge.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Siboniso Duma has asked Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, to waive toll fees at the Oribi Toll Plaza after the Umzimkhulu River bridge was closed two weeks ago for repairs.
A response to the request is expected tomorrow.
This follows heavy rains that caused one of the supports to shift, making it unsafe to use.
The R190-million repair is expected to take six months.
Since the closure residents living north of Port Shepstone have had to use the N2 and pay toll fees to travel to town, which is R40 for cars.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport Spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says talks with the minister are ongoing.
“We can indicate that the submission was well received by the minister and she indicated that she was processing the submission in conjunction with the board of Sanral. We asked that motorists be exempted from paying tolls on the N2 because that is the best alternative route. We were in contact with the office of the minister. They will be giving us feedback tomorrow,” says Sibiya.
