Traffic volumes to increase as holidaymakers return home

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says that traffic volumes are manageable so far.

This as holidaymakers are expected to travel back to major towns and cities, following the festive season break.

The RTMC says that while volumes have not yet peaked, there have been fatal crashes during the holiday season, with Johannesburg ranking high in terms of fatalities.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane says, “Things have been largely manageable except there were those crashes that happened, largely influenced by drunken driving. We’ve also seen instances of head-on collisions which seem to be related to fatigue. Those would have included public transport vehicles, that have traveled long distances, we’re suspecting fatigue in those instances.”

He adds: “But we’ve been worried about the high number of pedestrians, that were knocked by vehicles, particularly after midnight. Accidents taking place at that time, somehow involved pedestrians.”

KwaZulu-Natal traffic

The N3 Toll Concession company says traffic from KwaZulu-Natal to inland areas has been increasing since New Year’s Day.

The company says 1800 vehicles have been recorded per hour since yesterday.

N3TC Operations Manager Thania Dhoogra says traffic volumes are expected to further increase today and tomorrow as people head home from their various destinations.

“Road users are reminded to please remain patient and alert while behind the wheel. High traffic volumes will likely result in traffic congestion and delays along the route. Should it be required, law enforcement officials may implement traffic control interventions at strategic locations on the N3 toll route to manage the flow of traffic. Please adhere to the rules of the road and the instructions of law enforcement officials at all times.”
