Traffic police impound 25 vehicles in Limpopo

Twenty-five vehicles have been impounded in two traffic operations by the Limpopo Department of Transport on Wednesday.

Transport Department spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala says officers inspected 86 vehicles and impounded ten of them in Thabazimbi.

Thirteen summonses were issued for various offences.

Taueatsoala says fifteen vehicles were impounded at Ga-Mphahlele.

He says the operations are aimed at ensuring road safety.

“In a separate operation in the Capricorn District, the department’s scholar transport operation continued at Seleteng Ramphele in the Mphahlele area, resulting in the impounding of 15 vehicles: four buses, four minibuses, two LDVs/bakkies, and five seven-seaters. These enforcement actions underscore the department’s commitment to prioritising learner safety and enforcing compliance within the transport sector.”

Meanwhile, in Pretoria, authorities say scholar transport safety operations will be intensified, focusing on vehicle inspections and compliance with road traffic laws.

The operations are expected to continue throughout the year, especially following last week’s tragic incident in the Vaal that claimed the lives of 14 learners when a scholar transport mini bus taxi collided with a truck.

Impounding operations in North West

On Tuesday, private scholar transport operators in Mahikeng lashed out at the North West Department of Transport Management, for failing to properly educate them on the regulations of scholar transport vehicle classification.

Operators accused the department of allowing the use of seven-seater private vehicles to “mushroom” for years without intervention, only to begin a wave of impoundments once the practice became the industry standard.

The department says the vehicles are not suitable for use as scholar transport.

Departmental officials met with private scholar transport operators, following the suspension of their services.

They say the department started impounding their vehicles last week, and this has affected their operations.
