Heavy traffic flows are expected on the following major routes as holidaymakers will be travelling in and out of Gauteng.
Traffic volumes have started to pick up on major roads as holidaymakers make their way back to Gauteng.
N1 Petroport was packed with buses, taxis, and cars as holidaymakers made a quick stop to refresh. Drivers and passengers say they are happy to be back and had a safe trip.
Most of them are coming from Limpopo province.
However, the southbound traffic has been flowing smoothly on the N1 between Polokwane and Kranskop in Limpopo. Some motorists say though they’ve been experiencing congestion at the toll gates, they’re satisfied with the traffic flow.
Authorities say that over 1 700 vehicles passed through the busiest tollgates, Nyl Plaza and Kraanskop between midday and afternoon.
Traffic volumes rise as holidaymakers head back home:
Near Pumulani Toll Plaza a driver was issued with a ticket fine for not adhering to the rules of the road.
Gauteng Traffic Police says hands are on deck, and they will ensure that motorists obey road rules.
“I was not rushing on the road. I was obeying road rules, and I made sure that I stopped so that I could rest well and not cause accidents. We arrived back safely,” says one of the drivers.
Another driver adds, “We are from Pietersburg in Limpopo. We left the province early, and we had a good trip coming to Johannesburg. We thank the driver for adhering to the road rules.”
Spokesperson Sello Maremane says they will not tolerate any lawlessness.
“We are expecting a high traffic volume on Gauteng’s major roads, and we will be making sure that the rules of the road are obeyed at all times. We are urging drivers to be cautious at all times.”
