Traditional nurse gets two-year jail term for assaulting initiate

The Tsomo Magistrates’ Court in the Eastern Cape has sentenced a 30-year-old traditional nurse to a two-year jail term for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on an initiate.

Siyasanga Sifumba was arrested in December 2024 for assaulting an 18-year-old initiate with a wooden stick and also threatening him with a knife.

This incident occurred in the presence of the victim’s older brother who was also threatened by the traditional nurse.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, says the court declared Sifumba who has a conviction of assault grievous bodily harm unfit to possess a firearm.

“Sifumba was arrested on the 17 December 2024 following the hospitalisation of an initiate entrusted to his care. During trial, he pleaded not guilty claiming the initiate was bewitched, but the court found otherwise and sentenced him. We hope the sentence will serve as a deterrent initiation abuser,” says Tyali.
