A total of 34 illegal mine workers have been brought to the surface at an abandoned mine shaft in Stilfontein in the North West to date.
Nine bodies were also retrieved.
A 16-day operation funded by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy and the Minerals Council has seen state-of-the-art equipment and 180 personnel from SAPS, emergency medical services, pathology units and other stakeholders deployed.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu told the media during a visit to Stilfontein that over 1 500 illegal miners had been arrested before the extraction commenced, 997 of them are Mozambicans.
