Torching of Putco busses amounts to economic sabotage: Ministry

2 minutes

Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy has expressed great concern about the torching of over 50 Putco buses in the Nkangala District in Mpumalanga last night.

A group of unknown armed suspects targeted several depots in the province, and two employees were injured.

National Department of Transport Spokesperson, Collen Msibi says law enforcement officials should ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

“Putco’s bus fleet plays a key role in moving about 200,000 commuters a day, with its biggest operation being in Mpumalanga. The minister and deputy minister have thus characterized the act as economic sabotage given the critical role that the bus industry plays in the mobility of the workforce in the country. The minister  has instructed the department  to organise an urgent meeting with Natjoint to discuss this matter and develop necessary integrated response,” says Msibi.

DISCUSSION: Diplomatic solutions to the escalating DRC conflict:

The bus company’s spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu has confirmed that Putco is collaborating closely with the police to investigate the incident and determine the motive behind the attack.

“There has been those tensions, but it’s not something for us to make us speculate them. We can’t for sure say or point fingers at the taxi association or anyone else for that matter. For now, we are working with the police. We are going to rely on them to give us information as to who is behind this and their motive,” says Xulu.
