Fifth seed, Britain’s Jack Draper, was also impressive in his encounter against Brazil’s Joao Fonseca. Draper secured a 6-2, 6-4, 6-one win against the 18-year old to book his place in the round of 16 in Paris for the first time.

“I played well, conditions were quite difficult out here. I felt that the first set was really key, and then I got on top of him a little bit and I felt like I used my forehand well, I served pretty well, and mentally it was a good performance from me today. I’m just happy to be in the second week here and hopefully there’s more to come.”

Pegula, meanwhile, had to rally from a set down to beat former Wimbledon champion, Czech Marketa Vondrousova.

Vondrousova won the first set 6-3, but Pegula lifted her level to bag the next two, 6-4, 6-2 after a battle of almost two hours. Sixth seed, 18-year old Mirra Andreeva, won nine of the last 10 points to beat Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-1. Andreeva hit 27 winners to 15 to set up a fourth-round meeting with 17th seed, Daria Kasatkina, who now represents Australia.

Kasatkina brought an end to the campaign of Spanish 10th seed, Paula Badosa. Although Badosa hit four more winners than her opponent, she made 41 unforced errors compared to Kasatkina’s 17. The Australian finally secured a 6-1, 7-5 win.
