Three people – including a toddler – have been killed and three others seriously injured after a vehicle collided with a heavy truck on the R35 between Bethal and Middelburg in Mpumalanga on Saturday.
The three victims perished on the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that one of the drivers may have entered the R35 when it was not safe to do so.

“Yes, it’s quite concerning. And as the AA, this is where we say that education and awareness are quite critical, and a multi-pronged approach in terms of reducing road fatalities is the way to go. We will definitely amplify messages around this time, but it should be an everyday thing, so that by the time we reach your Easter period, your high-traffic period like this weekend, other long weekends, or your festive season, we are just reminding motorists. But it’s a culture that’s deeply entrenched in us in terms of driving safely on the roads,” says Automobile Association spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela.
