Three suspected armed robbers killed in shootout with KZN police

Three suspected armed robbers have been killed in a shootout with police in Newlands West in Durban, while two other suspects fled into the bushes.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Paul Magwaza says officers were patrolling in the area on Tuesday after the owner of a tavern in the Honeyrich area was held up at gunpoint by five men as he was closing up.

The robbers fled with cellphones, alcohol and an amount of money.

Magwaza says the patrolling officers spotted a car fitting the description of the robbers’ getaway vehicle. They switched on their sirens and blue lights to stop the vehicle.

Magwaza says after a car chase, the suspects suddenly stopped and began firing shots at the police officers.

“In defence of their lives, police returned fire, and in the process, three suspects were fatally wounded whilst two of them fled into the bush. Police recovered a 9mm pistol, cellphones, bottles of alcohol as well as an undisclosed amount of money. Investigations are ongoing, and police are on the hunt for the two suspects who fled on foot,” says Magwaza.
