Three people are stranded in the Mutale River at Gwakwani village outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo.
The stranded people had crossed the river to the neighbouring village but on their return, it was overflowing.
They cannot go back to the village as another rivulet is also overflowing. The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 9 warning in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces.
The three people, a mother and her two children, have been stranded since Sunday. They have spent the days and night in the rain.
Police and the emergency medical services have been called.
A police chopper which was supposed to rescue them has been allegedly cancelled due to bad weather conditions.
Some parts of Limpopo have been experiencing heavy downpours.
