The North West Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has welcomed the arrests of five people who reportedly scammed people R10 000, promising them jobs at the Matlosana Local Municipality.
Police say Paul Itumeleng, Tuelo Molekane, Simon Sethabela and Thabo Kgafane, have already appeared in court for fraud, corruption and impersonating a municipal officer.
Three of the accused are said to be municipal officers, while the other two are not working for the municipality, though they were reportedly found with filled application forms from the municipality.
Chairperson of the portfolio committee on Community Safety, Freddy Sonakile says the committee strongly condemns the exploitation of desperate job seekers, especially in a province struggling with a high unemployment rate.
“As we enter the festive season, we urge SAPS to maintain this level of urgency in all cases. Communities must know that corruption and impersonation of officials will not be tolerated. We will continue monitoring the case and expect the Municipality to strengthen its internal controls to prevent similar scams.”
