The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is searching for a seven year-old boy who went missing at Mdumbi Beach in the Eastern Cape on Sunday.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, says the boy alongside four other children between the ages of eight and 13, were visiting the beach with the family when they were caught in rip currents while swimming during the outgoing tide.

Three children were rescued while the boy remains missing.

Lambinon says a 13 year-old girl is currently recovering from hospital.

“Despite the extensive sea and shoreline search, there remains no signs of the missing seven-year- old male child. A female, age 13, was medically treated on the beach for non-fatal drowning symptoms and in a serious but stable condition she was taken to hospital by a family member – she is expected to make a full recovery. The remaining 2 girls were not injured. Police, assisted by Mdumbi Backpackers volunteers and Mdumbi NSRI/Nyandeni lifeguards, are continuing in ongoing search efforts,”says Lambinon.
