Thousands join Shaka Day celebrations, led by King Misuzulu in KZN

Thousands of people attend the Shaka Day celebrations at KwaDukuza, north of Durban, on Wednesday, led by AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

Royal household spokesperson, Prince Thulani Zulu says these celebrations were started by King Solomon in 1954 to celebrate the founder of the AmaZulu nation.

He says that after the first democratic elections in 1994, this day coincided with Heritage Day on the 24th of September, which also coincides with the day King Shaka was killed at his palace in KwaDukuza in 1828.

Prince Zulu says he expects King Misuzulu to deliver a call for unity.

“King Shaka fought with spears and shield. But we have today’s war, the war of poverty, the war of criminals, the war of corruption. All these things we hope His Majesty will talk about. Because his mouth is blessed when he pronounced that people must live in harmony without joblessness and poverty.”
