Thousands of people from across the Western Cape gathered in Green Point to celebrate the annual Cape Town Pride and Mardi Gras. The Pride Parade is an event to celebrate LGBTQIA+ awareness and inclusivity.
Director of the child rights group Molo Songololo, Patrick Solomons, says it is a celebration
“Today is a very special and important day. It’s a day of celebration of all the gains we made against discrimination, homophobia and to be inclusive. I remember many years ago, more than 40 years ago, we started the first march of Abigail with some black gays and lesbians, marching down Adderly street. So, today I’m here also to celebrate all my queer brothers and sisters, but also to bring attention to some of the atrocities that have happened against our children,” says Solomons
Festival goers shared their excitement.
“I am happy I have got my tribe with me; everybody is here. It’s beautiful, we are all one person. I wish I could even have a house here and stay here forever with my people,” says one the festival goers.
Another person said, “This is my first time at pride. What brings me down is to express myself and to stand up for our rights because some people make a mockery of us. We are who we are, we are born this way and nothing can change it.”
