Another body recovered in Tugela river uMsinga, March 7, 2026.
A third person has been found in the Tugela River in the Msinga area in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday morning after the bakkie they were travelling in was washed off a low-lying bridge during heavy rain on Thursday night.
Sbonela Khoza from the Msinga disaster management says the driver and front passenger were able to jump out in time, but the other 6 occupants who were seated in a canopy on the back of the bakkie couldn’t get out.
The other two victims were found some distance apart yesterday. Khoza says low-lying bridges can be very dangerous during heavy rain.
Sifiso Chonco says he had to look on helplessly as the swollen river swept the bakkie down the river in heavy rain.
His sister Gcinile is among the victims whose bodies have been recovered.
He says she started working on a farm in the area about a week ago, and was being brought home with other farm labourers when tragedy struck.
