The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape has confirmed that former Stellenbosch University student Theuns du Toit has been acquitted of all criminal charges related to a 2022 incident that sparked national attention.
Du Toit was charged with crimen injuria and malicious damage to property after a video circulated showing him urinating on the books and laptop of fellow student Babalo Ndwayana. He appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court, where the charges were dismissed.
Stellenbosch University responded to the outcome by stating that the ruling highlights the independence and fairness of its internal disciplinary procedures.
The university expelled Du Toit following an internal process that his legal team later challenged in 2023. The expulsion was upheld in court.
The institution also clarified that it was not a party to the criminal case brought against Du Toit by the NPA. In a statement, the university said it considers the matter closed.
