The SAHRC honours its longest serving staff members at their 30th Anniversary.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has acknowledged that one of the critical issues it needs to address is to ensure that its recommendations are properly implemented.
There are concerns that the public is losing trust in the commission due to a lack of implementation of its recommendations.
The SAHRC Commissioner, Sandra Makoasha, says their 30th anniversary celebrations will serve as an opportunity to reflect on their work.
“We’ve heard from civil organisations again criticising the Commission for its absence and these shortcomings, but also then providing us with solutions for us to implement going forward. But also as part of the 30th, we’re honouring those who have contributed immensely to human rights, our human rights defenders in South Africa.”
Makoasha adds: “There’s a lot of work, also speaking about the fact that we still, in terms of international and regional interactions regarding human rights, South Africa. The South African Human Rights Commission has been at the centre of civil developments in the region and internationally.”
