The Cheetahs and Springboks fullback laid to rest

The Cheetahs and Springboks fullback, Bevin Fortuin, has been laid to rest in his hometown of George in the Western Cape.

The 46-year-old died last week following a heart attack at a training session.

At the time of his death, he was the head coach of the Limpopo-based Northam Rhinos Rugby club.

Hundreds of friends, family and fans turned up to pay their last respects.

Fortuin was a beloved rugby figure in George.

He started his career with SWD Eagles before finding success with the Cheetahs and then earning two international caps with the Springboks.

Danny Goncalves, President of the Northam Rugby Club, said Fortuin played a key role in establishing post rugby career programmes for players.

“He wanted to see people being uplifted. He often spoke to me about what happens to people after rugby and I think in the time that Bevin spent there, there was a lot done in developing people, developing careers for the people. And obviously the fact that Bevin has that vision, it is the vision of the company as well, and everything just gelled from day 1 with Bevin being with us.”
