The Tembisa Hospital Accident and Emergency Unit is seen after a fire on 20 April 2025.
The man 48-year-old accused of starting the fire that gutted parts of the Tembisa Hospital in eastern Johannesburg is expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court.
Thembinkosi Mangonyana was arrested two weeks ago on a charge of arson and malicious damage to property following the fire last month.
The state indicated to the court that this would be a schedule five offence, however his legal team disagrees saying the charge falls under schedule one.
At Mangonyana’s last appearance, the magistrate ordered the state to get a decision from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) on which schedule the charge falls under.
He remains in custody.
The Public Servants Association (PSA) has accused the Gauteng Provincial Government of attempting to cover up the cause of last month’s fire at the Tembisa Hospital.
