Grade 9 pupil Rebotile Moloto to be laid to rest
A sombre mood prevailed in the village of Ga-Selepe in the Moletjie area as teenage schoolgirl Rebotile was laid to rest. The family’s spokesperson David Marokane says the past week has been difficult as they have been shattered by her sudden death.
“We find it very difficult to accept. We still need answers as to why Rebotile was stabbed. Today we are laying her to final resting place but the question remains, what will happen afterwards, especially for the mother, siblings and the witnesses of the murder.”
The funeral service of Rebotile drew scores of mourners, including fellow learners from Klaas Mothapo Secondary School. The late Rebotile’s classmates, Tshwarelo Mola and Rethabile Moloto, not related, have said that her young life was cut short.
“It makes me so sad after what happened to her. Her life was cut short in a way that is not good. She was a good kid but she died so brutally and no one deserves something like that. I feel sad because she was my friend and I used to do things with her. We usually did things together although we didn’t do it in public but we helped each other. Now I would say I don’t have anyone to talk to or just to be with, so it makes me feel sad.”
Another learner, Reneilwe Nxumalo said that it’s difficult to cope with Rebotile’s death and that they will miss her,
“The only way we going to cope is to remember that she’s no more and wherever she is she’s with God and she is happy.”
According to the police, the late Rebotile had witnessed a domestic-related dispute between her mother and stepfather the night before she was killed.
Preliminary investigations reveal that she had tried to intervene. The next morning while walking to school, she was attacked. The suspect in the murder is alleged to be a former police officer.
A municipal councillor, Mmaphuti Muthabine has called for justice and that the accused be denied bail.
“We ask the law enforcement agencies to fast track this process of making sure that that man rots in jail. We are appealing to the community of Polokwane, Limpopo, South Africa, to support the family of Moloto, especially when they are going to appear in court because Monday is the appearance of Mr. Mehlape.”
The accused has been charged with murder, arson, and intimidation. He will appear for the second time at the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
