A 16-year-old boy has briefly appeared in the Atlantis Magistrates Court on the Cape West Coast for allegedly planning to attack Cape Town International Airport and a nightclub in Cape Town in 2023.

The Hawks say the juvenile was arrested today by a multi-disciplinary intelligence-led operational team.

Hawks spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi, says during the search in 2023, no explosive devices were found.

He says it was established that the boy participated in social media chat groups and was allegedly recruited to be an “extremist.”

The minor also allegedly recruited another person in 2023 to assist him in destroying the Statue of Mary at the Melkbosstrand Catholic Church.

The boy has been released into the care of his parents.
