A taxi security guard was fatally shot, and several others were injured during a shootout involving alleged rival taxi groups in Nyanga on the Cape Flats.

Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembesile Patekile confirmed that 13 rifles and seven handguns were seized at the scene. Nineteen security guards have been taken in for questioning as part of the investigation.

Patekile stated, “People who are there now will be taken for questioning, and they belong to certain security companies that we are going to follow up and question. They are not from here; they are from other provinces. So we looked into that. Once we are done with the scene, we will continue following up about how they landed up here. And some of them returned to taxi violence. They are not community members; they are part of the warring groups.”

The provincial taxi task team is handling the investigation.
