The Alexandra Randburg Midrand Taxi Association (ARMTA) Chairman has been shot and killed in Marlboro, north of Johannesburg, on Thursday morning.
Police are on the scene.
One of his bodyguards also died at the scene, while a second bodyguard and a motorist have rushed to hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says preliminary findings indicate that the shooting might be linked to taxi violence.
Nevhuhulwi says, “This scene started in the morning around 9 am on the same street. It was two vehicles that were travelling together, a Mahindra and an Audi vehicle. In the Audi, one person and in the Mahindra, apparently, it was securities, four securities and they were attacked by suspects driving a white BMW and they fired shots at them.”
She says the suspects are still at large.
“Currently, two people have already been declared dead while three have been taken to hospital with injuries. The police are on the lookout for the suspects. The vehicle that allegedly reportedly attacked these people was found a few kilometres away from the scene. It was found abandoned.”- Additional reporting by Diteboho Ntimane.
