Tau appeals Tribunal’s ruling against Vodacom’s Maziv acquisition

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau has confirmed his decision to appeal the Competition Tribunal’s recent ruling.

It blocks Vodacom from acquiring a controlling stake in Remgro’s fibre business, Maziv.

The move comes as a surprise, given that the competition authorities fall under Tau’s department.

Vodacom and Maziv have given notice that they plan to appeal against the Tribunal’s decision to block their merger.

The deal would have created the largest fibre network in the country.

Competition Commission spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga says, “The Commission notes the appeal by Vodacom as well as the honorable Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition. At this stage, we are not able to comment further as we had not had sight of the substantive issues that have been raised by the two appellants.”
