Suspended EMPD boss Julius Mkhwanazi.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Police Chief Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi has told the Ad Hoc Committee that he did not know Witness D.
Witness D, whose real name was Marius van der Merwe, was gunned down outside his house in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni last month.
Weeks before his death, Van der Merwe testified before the Madlanga Commission that Commissioner Mkhwanazi gave an instruction for the body of a deceased man to be dumped in a dam in Nigel.
Mkhwanazi has distanced himself from Witness D’s murder, and told the committee that he only knew about him after his murder.
“I don’t know him physically. I never saw him, and now I’m able to receive some affidavits, some photos of the people that he killed in illegal mining, when they were closing illegal. Even there, he’s painting that there’s a minister who instructed him to kill, or to close that mine, that illegal mine. I don’t think security companies, the Department of Minerals … they give powers to close mines (sic), you see, but that’s what he did, he confirmed,” explains Mkhwanazi.
