Suspended DPP Chauke to testify as Nkabinde Enquiry resumes

Suspended South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv Andrew Chauke, is expected to take the stand when the Nkabinde Enquiry resumes in Pretoria on Thursday.

Proceedings have been adjourned until 2pm to allow the panel and the evidence leaders time to study Chauke’s statement, which was only submitted on Wednesday.

The enquiry is examining Chauke’s fitness to hold office. He is accused by retired National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Head advocate Shamila Batohi of instituting racketeering charges against former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Head Johan Booysens and the Cator Manor Organised Crime Unit.

Chauke also faces accusations relating to his decision to discontinue murder charges against former Police Intelligence Head Richard Mdluli.

The enquiry was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to probe his fitness to hold office.

Chauke’s Legal Representative Adv Tembeka Nqcukaitobi says they are ready to proceed with Chauke’s testimony.

Nqcukaitobi says, “We have decided to call Mr. Chaugke next. We have requested the consent of the panel to commence the proceedings. We’ve spoken to our learned friends and they do not object. So, we would request then a directive that the statement of Mr. Chauke to be circulated.”
