Suspects linked to robberies at places of worship in Gauteng arrested

Gauteng police have arrested six suspects from an alleged gang that has been targeting places of worship across the province. The suspects were arrested during the early hours of Monday morning in Sophiatown following a robbery in Florida, west of Johannesburg.

A large quantity of high-value sound systems was recovered from the suspects’ vehicle.

The suspects have been linked to over 10 robberies and break-ins across Gauteng, including incidents in the East Rand, Northern Suburbs, and West Rand.

“The Gauteng Department of Community Safety commends law enforcement for arresting a notorious gang in the early hours of this morning in Sophiatown that have been targeting places of worship across the province. Law enforcement has been following up on information regarding a group of suspects in a Toyota Quantum committing violent crime at various churches in Gauteng. The suspects would reportedly enter places of worship at night and hold security guards’ hostage and steal sound systems. During the operation, six suspects were arrested while one was fatally wounded and two sustained serious injuries. Three unlicensed firearms and ammunition have been seized,” says spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Ofentse Morwane.
