The KwaDukuza Community Policing Forum on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast has called on authorities to ensure that the suspect in the killing of Road Traffic Inspectorate Superintendent, Mariemuthoo Arumugam, is successfully prosecuted.
The 27-year-old suspect who was arrested on Monday will appear in court today.
It is alleged that the suspect robbed a taxi driver and passengers. The traffic officer approached the vehicle along the N2 at Groutville, north of Durban, last week because it was incorrectly parked on the side of the road.
The suspect then fired shots at the officer, killing him.
Chairperson of the forum, Ephraim Zungu, says Arumugam had always put his community first.
“The successful arrest of the suspect whom I regard as very disturbing as he is so young. It actually now gives me a sense of relief that he is arrested and he will be appearing in court but also that the family will find closure to this crime that has happened.”
