Suspect linked to Mpho Mafole’s murder to appear in court

A suspect linked to the murder of former City of Ekurhuleni Chief Municipality auditor, Mpho Mafole, is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court today.

The 40-year-old man was arrested on Sunday.

Mafole was found in his car with multiple gunshot wounds after a drive-by shooting last month.

He was an employee of the municipality for just three months.

The exact motive for his killing is still under investigation.

It is understood that Mafole was probing a R2 billion shortfall in the municipality’s finances at the time of his death.

Calls for probe into shootings

Meanwhile, City of Ekurhuleni Mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, is demanding that the police investigate a series of shootings involving senior municipal officials.

Xhakaza says the city has witnessed a disturbing trend of violent attacks against officials fighting corruption.

In 2023, the city’s chief financial officer, Kagiso Lerutla, survived a shooting, while Simnikiwe Mapini, an adjudicator in the finance department, was tragically killed in the same year.

Xhakaza says Mafole was targeted for his commitment to clean governance.

He says the city cannot allow intimidation and violence to derail the mission to transform Ekurhuleni into a renewed city defined by good governance, transparency, and accountability.
