Suspect killed during police shootout near Mthatha

Eastern Cape police have fatally shot a suspect, on the R61 in Corhana near Mthatha.

Provincial police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says the Police National Intervention Unit (NIU) acted on intelligence about a suspect in possession of illegal firearms.

It is alleged that NIU members intercepted and tried to stop the vehicle, when the suspect got out and opened fire at the police.

Another suspect was shot and killed in a similar situation on Thursday on the R61 towards the Mthatha airport.

Gantana says firearms were also found at the scene in that incident.

“In response to this direct and lethal threat, the police members returned fire. The suspect was fatally wounded during the exchange. Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene, where the suspect was officially declared deceased. Preliminary reports confirm that two firearms have been recovered thus far. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been notified of the incident in line with standard procedure.”
