The man charged with the murder of former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Secretary-General Sindiso Magaqa has been denied bail.
Zweliphansi Sikhosana appeared in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal.
Sikhosana applied for bail after his re-arrest in July in connection with the murder of Magaqa in 2017.
Sikhosana is allegedly one of the masterminds behind the murder.
The court ruled that Sikhosana failed to prove that it would be in the interest of justice to release him on bail.
Provincial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says, “The matter was in court today (Tuesday) for ruling on the bail judgement and the court found that the accused didn’t show that if he is released out on bail will be in the interest of justice, and for that reason the matter was remanded to the 06th of October 2025. ”
Ramkisson-Kara says, “In addition to what we heard in court today, the state has served the accused with the indictment, so the accused will make the first appearance in PMB (Pietermaritzburg) High Court in October and he will be joined with other accused in this matter.”
‘Nobody is above the law’
The Magaqa family says they are happy with the court’s ruling. Family Spokesperson Lwazi Magaqa says this shows that nobody is above the law and that the justice system serves all the people.
” The court decision is giving us hope that the killers of Magaqa will be apprehended one by one. They must come forward and tell us why they killed our brother. The family is coping well, and I can see from the SMS’s and WhatsApp messages in the group, they are happy about the decision today.”
