Suspect arrested for attempting to rob 3 DA MPs in Phillipi

An 18-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly trying to rob three Democratic Alliance (DA) Members of Parliament in Philippi outside Cape Town on Tuesday.

Police Committee Chairperson Ian Cameron, Lisa Shickerling and Nicholas Gotsell were returning from conducting an oversight visit at a police training college in Philippi when the incident happened.

The vehicle the MPs were travelling in was ambushed and its windows were broken with bricks.

Gotshell and Cameron were injured.

Gotsell was admitted to hospital because he sustained serious injuries.

The suspect is in hospital under police guard.

He was arrested when he sought medical assistance for a wound at a facility in Lentegeur on Tuesday evening.

The man was apparently shot when one of the occupants of the vehicle the suspects targeted allegedly fired a shot.

Parliament’s presiding officers have condemned the attack.

The legislature’s spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says, “The presiding officers express deep concern, noting such shocking acts of criminality not only endanger the lives of elected representatives and members of the public but also undermine Parliament’s constitutional duty to hold organs of state accountable through oversight. Parliament conveys heartfelt wishes for full and speedy recovery to the members.”
