Pikitup workers
Residents of suburbs north west of Johannesburg including Linden, Robindale, Ferndale and Randpark Ridge, have raised concerns over garbage piling up due to a strike at Pikitup in Randburg.
The strike has affected refuse collection in these areas for the past three weeks.
An agreement between striking workers and the employer was announced last week, but services have still not resumed fully.

Vice chairperson of the Northriding residents association, Mark Naidoo, says residents are frustrated and just hope this issue will be resolved.
“We hope it resolves, for the past few weeks the community has been dealing with repeated delays in rubbish collections by Pikitup, and residents are beyond frustrated. Uncollected refuse is piling up, and what’s worse, whilst piling up, creating health hazards, attracting pests and robbing people of a clean and safe environment they deserve. Unfortunately, it’s not a luxury service, but a basic municipal responsibility, when they fail, the community suffers.”
