The R81 road to Giyani and the R522 between Polokwane and Alldays has been identified as being among the deadliest roads in Limpopo. This is according to a study that various stakeholders working with the provincial Transport Department privately funded.

The Limpopo Road Safety programme has been handed over to the Department. It intends to glean more information on ways of reducing road fatalities.

Specialist researcher Talia Ismail says, “We also noted that the R81 received a one-star rating for both pedestrians and vehicles and the R522 and the R525, these roads displayed significant crashes, as well as the R528 and the N11. We also noticed that these frequent incidents occurred on roads that received a rating of one and two star for both vehicle occupants and pedestrians.”

The Department’s head, Steve Matjena says the study will provide them with important information on curbing road fatalities during the festive season,

“They have done assessments, they have done research and this is something that we have been lacking when there are challenges. Whenever there are road crashes what we do is we implement solutions but now what we have is a strategy that gives us a lot of data and is intensive and crucial for us to apply as various solutions to various roads. For example the strategy forces us or advises us to say when there is an accident and all the data that we collect from that.”
