Student accommodation providers demand NSFAS address payments delays

Aggrieved student accommodation service providers have demanded NSFAS roadshow officials should address their payment issues collectively after they refused to be assisted individually.

The service providers were holding a meeting with NSFAS today in Bloemfontein in the Free State today.

They claim that they are owed money for housing students dating back to 2023 but they are still continuing to render student accommodation.

Service providers claim NSFAS is now demanding offer letters even though this was never an issue before.

Landlord from the Free State Accommodation Providers Forum, Patrick Silo, says they are being sent back and forth between NSFAS and the middleman, Training Young Minds.

“We have not been paid since 2024. How are you expected to make improvements on your property, so you can improve your grading? How are you continuing to pay monthly for services such as WiFi, water, and electricity, yet you are not getting any payment? Most people and transport as well for those who are outside five kilometres radius and most people losing their properties, because they can no longer keep up with monthly repayments of their loans. And that seems to be not bothering anybody. We spoke to the institution as the Free State Accommodation Providers Forum and the principal of the institution really responded or treated us with great contempt where she told us she doesn’t have any contract with any of the accommodation providers who are here,” says Silo.
