Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, says the struggle for inclusive gender parity between men and women is an ongoing challenge in South Africa. Mashatile was one of the key speakers at the opening of the P20 Women’s Parliament in Cape Town.
This year’s two-day gathering forms part of Women’s Month celebrations in the country.
Mashatile stated the issue of gender equality is a process rather than a once off event.
The theme for this year is “Accelerating Equality, Sustainability and Shared Growth”.
Mashatile told the gathering that despite the many gains women have achieved in leadership positions under the democratic dispensation, more needs to be done to emulate the women of 1954.
“Although the contribution of women brought apartheid to its knees and ushered in democratic dispensation, the fight for gender equality continues. We recognised the efforts women have made since the early 20th century towards achieving gender equality in South Africa. The Freedom Charter, which was adopted on June 26, 1955, explicitly addresses the creation of an equal society. This is supported by the Women’s Charter,” says Mashatile.
He has lauded the inclusion of women in positions of leadership.
“We salute the contribution of women towards the liberation of South Africa. Today, we are proud to witness the inclusion of women in leadership positions in government and in the private sector. When addressing the Women’s Day celebrations this past Saturday, President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted South Africa holds second place among the G20 nations regarding women’s representation.”
This morning, I will deliver a keynote address at the hybrid sitting of the P20 Women’s Parliament, scheduled to take place from 13 – 14 August at the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Chambers in Parliament.
