DA Free Sate leadership engaged with businesses in Matjhabeng, 18 August 2025.
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says the Matjhabeng Local Municipality’s failure to provide basic services hampers economic growth.
Some businesses in the Free State municipality are reportedly facing collapse due to water shortages, power outages, and sewage spills, among other issues.
Steenhuisen says these issues block businesses from expanding and creating jobs.

Steenhuisen visits Welkom as part of what the DA says is its mission to rescue South Africa and put the country back on the path of growth.
The agriculture minister adds that the same story is replicated in many municipalities across the country, stating that municipalities are the engine room for growth in an economy.
“That’s where the rubber hits the road, that’s where the local services are delivered, that’s where the national government and provincial government’s plans are rolled out, but when you’ve got incapable municipalities like this one in Welkom, they are now standing firmly in the way as roadblock for economic growth and jobs in the country,” says Steenhuisen.
