State seeking 15-year jail sentence in firearm discharge case: Malema

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says the state is seeking a 15-year jail term in his firearm discharge case. Malema is expected to be back in the East London Magistrate’s Court next week for sentencing.

Magistrate Twanet Olivier found Malema guilty of unlawfully discharging a firearm during the EFF’s fifth-anniversary rally at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane in 2018.

He was convicted in October last year on charges that also included unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as reckless endangerment.
