State opposes bail for four alleged drug mules

The state has argued that five alleged drug mules arrested at OR Tambo International Airport last month are a flight risk, as they were en route to Hong Kong when they were apprehended.

Four of the women appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court for their bail application.

They face charges related to drug trafficking. Police allegedly found drugs concealed in their sneakers, underwear and on their bodies.

The state is opposing bail.

The defence, however, maintains that the women were coerced into committing the offences.

The matter has been postponed to next week Monday.

“What happened today at court is normal. One cannot term it to be challenges. Remember the charge is dealing in drugs, so you cannot expect it to be simple. I mean, we dealt with what we’re expecting. They are not happy with the delay, but I can assure you it’s not caused by the court or the state or myself or anyone. I mean there’s a lot of matters at court. The magistrate can only deal with a certain number of matters in a day, although they are not happy, but they understand it’s how things are,”’ their legal representative Wisani Monareng explains.
