Retired Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Police Chief Revo Spies gives evidence at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria on November 11, 2025.
Retired Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Police Chief Revo Spies says Acting Deputy EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi was at the scene of a Meyerton business when copper was confiscated and stolen by officers.
Spies testified at the Madlanga Commission on Monday. He says the confiscation of the copper cables was illegal.
Spies says EMPD officers linked to Mkhwanazi had embarked on illegal activities, which are subject to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigations.
He says, “And now Kirscher is speaking to the person in the back of the car, which when he climbs out, we can immediately recognise him, but it’s Brigadier Mkhwanazi. Now the driver in the orange top that you just referenced is also a member. Also a member of the EMPD, thank you…The vehicle is also allocated to the specialised services, but we can identify them.”
