Speaker opens Women’s Parliament, honours female struggle heroes

The role of women in the democratic era, which began many years ago and included the apartheid era, was the topic of discussion at the National Assembly.

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza officially opens the P20 Women’s Parliament on Wednesday. The event is part of the Women’s Month recognition and celebrations throughout the country.

The theme for this year is ” Accelerating Equality, Sustainability and Shared Growth”.

“It is these women in 1954 in our country who were able to work across political lines, religious and class, and said we will form a federation of women as a vehicle that will enable us to advance our freedom. Last year, we marked seventy years of the work of the Federation of South African Women. Instructive to what they did was the Women’s Charter, which actually defined what dispensation women of South Africa wanted.”
