Spaza owners allege that they are charged for recommendation letters

1 minute

Some owners of food outlets including spaza shops in the Makhado Municipality in Louis Trichardt, Limpopo, say they have failed to register their businesses.

They say this is because traditional leaders are charging them a fee for recommendation letters. The deadline for registration of the businesses was last Friday.

Spaza shop owner David Musiame says he was unable to pay the fee.

“I hardly survive from the amount that my spaza shop makes a day and the R8000 that the traditional leader wants – I cannot afford it and I do not even make that a month in a year.”

The House of Traditional Leaders is yet to comment on the allegation.
