Space agency warns about geomagnetic storm

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has put out a warning for elevated geomagnetic storm activity to affect the Earth on Tuesday.

The geomagnetic storm is caused by burst of energy from the Sun and will affect high frequency radio communications on earth.

The Space agency says recent activity on the Sun triggered a coronal mass ejection (CME), a cloud of particles careening towards the Earth, and “expected to impact Earth from the early hours of Wednesday 20 January,” SANSA said in a statement on Monday. “This impact will interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and cause a geomagnetic storm.”

SANSA expects the upcoming geomagnetic storm to be moderate to strong in severity, saying that the storm will go unnoticed to most people, only causing disruptions in technologies such as navigation, communication, and electricity grids.

The video shows the Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) that was triggered by the X1,9 solar flare on Sunday. The disc in the middle of the image covers the light of the sun in order for the CME to be observed.
