A couple convicted of murdering a former partner and committing fraud is set to be sentenced in the High Court in Pretoria today.
Sibusiso and Lerato Mahlangu were found guilty of the premeditated murder of Lerato’s former partner, Sibusiso Sithebe. They were also convicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder and three counts of fraud.
On January 2, 2022, the Mahlangu couple lured Sithebe to their home in Soshanguve, where they killed him, staged the crime scene, and burned his body inside the house.
Lerato later falsely identified the body as her husband’s and filed three fraudulent insurance claims with Old Mutual, totaling R500,000.
The scheme fell apart when Sibusiso Mahlangu was arrested for possession of a stolen car, and authorities discovered he had been registered as deceased.
The couple will appear in court today for mitigation of sentence.
