SOS Coalition congratulates SABC News on milestone

National Coordinator of the Support Public Broadcasting Coalition (SOS) Uyanda Siyotula has congratulated the SABC distributing news and information to a wide audience across the country for 75 years.

Siyotula says the public broadcaster remains focused on enforcing editorial independence and continues to ensure that it provides news and current affairs that is credible and impartial.

However, she has expressed concern over the SABC’s funding model.

She says the coalition has written letters to Cabinet and the National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza over the withdrawal of the SABC Bill in Parliament in November last year.

“Really it is a big problem and we have recently written letters to Cabinet as well as to the Speaker of the National Assembly, really just saying the SABC Bill needs to be gazetted. Because the minister followed every procedure according to the rules of the National Assembly to withdraw that bill. And in one of the key issues in fact, relating to the editorial independence that we spoke about. One of the key issues with that particular bill is the fact that is taking the SABC back to a place where there was limited editorial independence.”
