SONA failed to update on promises made in previous addresses: BBC

The Chief Executive Officer of the Black Business Council (BBC) Kganki Matabane has argued that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the National Address failed to give progress on promises made in previous addresses.

Matabane says the President signed the Public Procurement Bill into law two years ago, however, there has still been no implementation due to a delay in developing the necessary regulations.

Matabane says amid the growing public-private partnerships in reforming various sectors of the economy including electricity and logistics, small businesses as well as youth and women led businesses are getting left behind.

“The transformation fund, there has been some movement there with Minister Tau but we just need a timeline to say, when is the transformation going to be implemented. And it shouldn’t be a difficult thing to do because that’s how you hold ministers accountable. We welcome the water crisis committee but we are worried that it may still be comprised of big business alone excluding us, small businesses and excluding women and everyone else. And unfortunately big business like we’ve seen now with Eskom, they are conflicted. So they’re trying to prepare Eskom for privatisation by themselves, so we’re worried that they’ll do the same with water.”
