Some workers call for suspension of Vhembe Municipal manager

Some municipal workers at Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo have embarked on a go-slow demanding the suspension of the Municipal Manager Norman Kutama.

Workers are calling for an investigation into Kutama allegedly appointing a company to render VAT collection services related to SARS returns submission, between December 2024 and June this year, without following proper processes.

The municipality was not ready to comment.

SAMWU local spokesperson, Thilivhali Ramashidzha says they want Kutama to be placed on special leave to pave the way for an investigation.

“Vhembe District workers who are members of SAMWU resolved they will be working from head office while this matter is being resolved. They strongly believed that Mr Norman Zwanda Kutama should not come to work or report to the Vhembe District Municipality. We have taken the position that the municipal manager be put on forced suspension.”

Meanwhile, Municipal Manager at Modimole-Mookgophong and Thulamela local municipalities are also facing allegations of corruption.

Modimole-Mookgophong Manager Ntoampie Thobela has been placed on suspension for allegations of corruption and mal-administration.

Thobela was suspended after the municipality borrowed R35 million from a service provider to pay municipal debts, instead of the approved R21 million by council.

At Thulamela Local Municipality, Municipal Manager Masala Makumulela has been suspended for alleged corruption in the appointment of contractors for maintenance and rehabilitation of streets.

Both Thobela and Makumule’s applications to challenge their suspension in court were struck off the roll due to a lack of urgency this week. Modimole-Mookgophong and Thulamela municipalities have refused to comment.
